Sleeping in a VW Campervan
Sleeping in a VW campervan is a unique and beloved experience for many travelers and adventurers. These iconic vans offer freedom and flexibility, allowing you to explore new places and sleep under the stars. But before you hit the road, there are a few things to consider about sleeping in a VW campervan.
How many people can sleep in a VW campervan?
The number of people who can comfortably sleep in a VW campervan depends on the size and layout of the van. Here's a general breakdown:
- Transporter T6/T5: These vans typically sleep two adults comfortably on the main bed in the back. Some models have a pop-top roof that adds another sleeping space for one or two children. Adults can also sleep in a pop-top, but it’s a bit of a squash.
- California: These vans come with a built-in pop-up roof that creates a double bed up top, sleeping for children or two adults. It is a bit of a squash for two adults. The main bed in the back can also sleep two adults. So, a California can comfortably sleep four people just like the Transporter T5/T6.
- Grand California: This larger van has a fixed high roof and a permanent double bed in the back. Some models also have a bed that pulls out from the roof creating another double bed for children. It could sleep two adults but may be a squash. Hopefully, you know each other very well.
Things to consider for sleeping comfort:
- Mattress: The mattress is one of the most important factors for a good night's sleep in a campervan. Choose a firm and supportive mattress, and make sure it fits the bed space well. Some campervans come with built-in mattresses, while others require you to buy your own. Mattress toppers are a great idea to go on a sofa that turns into a bed like in the T5/T6.
- Bedding: You can use sleeping bags, duvets, or sheets in your campervan. Sleeping bags are good for keeping warm in cooler weather, while duvets or sheets offer more comfort.
- Privacy: If you plan on sleeping in your campervan in public places, you may want to invest in blackout curtains or window shades for privacy. Most VW’s come fitted with some sort of blackout blind.
Tips for a good night's sleep in a VW campervan:
- Pack light: The less stuff you have in your campervan, the more comfortable you'll be.
- Get organized: Having a designated place for everything will help you keep your van tidy and make it easier to find what you need.
- Relax and unwind: Take some time to relax before bed and avoid using electronic devices for at least an hour before bedtime.
Enjoy the experience: Sleeping in a VW campervan is a unique and special experience. Make the most of it and enjoy the adventure!
Our Tip:
A good idea is to get a white duvet cover put the mattress topper inside and use that for your bottom sheet. During the day place this up in the pop top, there is enough space even if the pop top is down. Add a duvet and soft pillows and this makes a perfect sleeping arrangement. Bring a bit of luxury into your campervan.
With a little planning and preparation, you can have a comfortable and enjoyable sleep in your VW campervan.
