5 Top Tips to Keep Your Vehicle Safe from Theft:

From Inspector Dave Wise

Hello there,

Inspector Dave Wise here, from West Mercia Police. Over my years of service, I've unfortunately witnessed the heartbreak and frustration that theft from vehicles can bring. However, I believe that being informed can empower you to protect your vehicle. Here are my top five strategies to deter those pesky thieves:

Out of Sight, Out of Mind:

Always remove valuables or tempting items from plain sight. Store them in the boot or hide them, because if thieves can't see them, they're less likely to be tempted.

Embrace Technology:

Consider fitting your car with an audible alarm. Modern alarms that ping your mobile with alerts are particularly effective. Plus, dash cams with parking modes can deter any would-be thief caught on camera.

Physical Barriers Work:

Tinted windows can deter thieves from peeking in (but do ensure you're within UK legal limits). Locking fuel caps prevent fuel theft, and locking wheel nuts are a solid defence against wheel or tyre theft.

Be Smart About Parking:

Try parking in well-lit areas or where you're in sight of CCTV cameras. If possible, utilise car parks with attendants or security.

Always Stay Alert:

This might sound simple, but always lock doors & windows. And keep an eye out for anyone lingering or acting suspiciously near where you park. Your gut feeling can often be right.

Remember, knowledge is power. By taking these steps, you're not only protecting your own vehicle, but you're also playing a part in deterring criminals from our community. Let's work together to keep West Mercia safe. If you notice anything suspicious, don’t hesitate to report it to us.

Stay safe out there,

Hope you found that helpful and interesting. Here are a few more tips that we could do to keep our vehicles safe.

  • Remove temptations: Don't leave valuables in sight, even for a short moment. This includes laptops, cameras, electronics, and bags. Store them in a locked compartment or take them with you when you leave the van.

  • Secure your doors and windows: Make sure all doors and windows are locked when you're not in the van, even if you're just stepping out for a quick errand.

  • Park in well-lit areas: When possible, park your van in well-lit areas with CCTV coverage. This will deter potential thieves and make it easier for you to see what's happening around your van.

  • Be aware of your surroundings: Pay attention to your surroundings and trust your gut instinct. If you feel unsafe in a particular area, move on and find a different place to park.

Physical security:

Physical security is a good idea, thieves will see these and may decide to go elsewhere.

  • Steering wheel lock: A steering wheel lock is a visible deterrent and can make it more difficult for thieves to steal your van.

  • Wheel clamps: Wheel clamps are another visible deterrent that can make it difficult for thieves to tow your van away.

  • Deadlocks: Deadlocks are more secure than standard locks and can be a good option for added security on your van doors.

Electronic security:

  • Alarm system: An alarm system is a good way to deter thieves and alert you if someone tries to break into your van.

  • Tracker: A tracker can help you locate your van if it is stolen.

  • Immobilizer: An immobilizer is a device that prevents your van from starting without the correct key or code.

Additional tips:

  • Don't keep your spare key in the van: If your van is stolen and the thieves find the spare key, they'll be able to drive it away easily. Keep your spare key in a safe place, such as at home with a trusted friend or family member.

  • Be careful who you give your keys to: Only give your keys to people you trust, such as family members or close friends.

  • Be vigilant: Be aware of your surroundings and take steps to protect your van. Don't make it easy for thieves to target you.

By following these tips, you can help to improve the security of your vehicle and give yourself peace of mind while you're on the road.
