Somerset Adventure
Somerset is a fantastic county to explore by campervan, offering a wonderful mix of Victorian seaside towns, sandy beaches, picturesque harbours, medieval villages and the stunning landscapes of Exmoor National Park. This circular route takes you along Somerset's beautiful coastline before heading inland to one of the county's peaceful countryside campsites.
Clevedon, Sand Bay to Weston-super-Mare
Begin your journey in the elegant seaside town of Clevedon, famous for its Grade I listed Victorian pier, attractive seafront and peaceful Marine Lake. Take time for a stroll along the promenade before heading south along the coast. Tiffin restaurant is a great place to stop for a coffee and maybe a cake or their famous tiffin cake. They have seating outside overlooking the pier and the sea.
Your next stop is Sand Bay, a peaceful stretch of coastline just north of Weston-super-Mare. Far quieter than its famous neighbour, Sand Bay offers miles of natural beach backed by dunes and coastal grassland. It's an excellent place for a relaxing walk, with sea views across the Bristol Channel and opportunities to spot local wildlife. Very good car park at the end of the road along the front. Run by the National Trust, Ideal for campervans and motorhomes.
Continue to Weston-super-Mare, one of Somerset's best-known seaside resorts. Wander along the Grand Pier, enjoy fish and chips overlooking the beach, or take a walk across the wide sandy shoreline.
Spend a few nights at Uphill Wharf Campsite in Uphill, just south of Weston-super-Mare. This welcoming campsite sits beside the historic wharf and offers a peaceful setting within easy walking distance of Uphill Beach (you can walk into Weston from this beach), the marina and the nature reserve. A walk up to Uphill Church rewards you with fantastic panoramic views across the Somerset coastline. Can highly recommend The Shop Inn in the village, which provides good food and drink.
Burnham-on-Sea & Brean Sands
Leave Uphill and continue south to Burnham-on-Sea, a traditional seaside town well known for its famous lighthouse standing on the beach. The long sandy shoreline is ideal for walking, especially when the tide is out, while the town offers plenty of cafés and shops to explore.
A short drive brings you to Brean Sands, home to one of Somerset's longest beaches stretching for several miles towards Burnham-on-Sea. Whether you enjoy relaxing on the beach, walking the dunes or taking in the sea views, Brean is a wonderful stop for campervan travellers.
Stay overnight for a few days at Northam Farm Caravan & Camping Park, one of Somerset's most popular family-run campsites. Located just a short walk from the beach, it provides an excellent base for exploring Brean Sands, with spacious pitches and easy access to local attractions, coastal walks and cycle routes. Some good bars, restaurants, and eating places in Brean.
Watchet, Dunster & Minehead
Continue west along the coast to the charming harbour town of Watchet. Wander around the colourful marina, browse the independent shops and enjoy lunch overlooking the harbour. There's a good fish & chips shop overlooking the coast & harbour. The town has plenty of maritime history and is an excellent place to slow down for a few hours.
Next, travel to the beautiful medieval village of Dunster, widely regarded as one of Somerset's finest historic villages. Its cobbled streets, independent shops and traditional tea rooms make it a delightful place to explore. Overlooking the village is the magnificent Dunster Castle, surrounded by beautiful gardens and woodland walks.
Just a few minutes away lies Dunster Beach, where colourful beach huts line the shore and the peaceful coastline provides wonderful views across the Bristol Channel. Good parking for motorhomes and campervans overlooking the sea.
Nearby Minehead, the gateway to Exmoor National Park. Enjoy a stroll along the promenade, explore the harbour, do a bit of shopping or simply relax on the beach while watching the sunset over the sea.
Leave the coast behind and head inland through the rolling Somerset countryside towards Lowtrow Cross Caravan & Camping Park near Upton, close to Taunton.
This peaceful rural campsite offers an ideal place to unwind after several days exploring the coast. Pub at the entrance to the site offering good food, local beers and ciders. Surrounded by open countryside and quiet lanes, it provides a relaxing base for a few nights to enjoy the rest of Somerset's beautiful landscapes.
From here you can easily visit nearby Taunton, explore the Quantock Hills National Landscape or simply enjoy the tranquillity of the campsite before heading home.
