Taking Your Campervan Abroad

It’s time to experience taking your campervan abroad, but what do we need to do?

We have never taken our campervan abroad yet, so this is all new to us and all researched online. If we have missed something, please comment below.

To take your campervan abroad, you will need the following:

  • Vehicle documentation:
    • Your V5C logbook (vehicle registration certificate)
    • A valid MOT certificate (if required by the country you are visiting)
    • Proof of insurance for your vehicle
    • A VE-103 form (if you are hiring the campervan)

  • Driving documentation:
    • Your valid UK driving licence
    • An International Driving Permit (IDP) (required in some countries)

  • Other documentation:
    • Your passport and visas (if required by the country you are visiting)
    • Travel insurance documents
    • European breakdown cover policy number and related documents

In addition to the above, you may also need to carry the following equipment:

  • A warning triangle
  • Reflective jackets (one for each passenger)
  • Headlamp beam deflectors (depending on your vehicle)
  • First aid kit (compulsory in some countries)

You should also check the specific requirements of the countries you are visiting, as some may have additional requirements for campervans. For example, in France, you will need to display a Crit'air (Clean Air) sticker in some cities.

Here are some additional tips for taking your campervan abroad:

  • Make sure your vehicle is in good condition and has been serviced recently.
  • Plan your route carefully and book campsites in advance, especially if you are traveling during peak season.
  • Be aware of the different driving regulations in each country you visit.
  • Carry a phrasebook or translation app in case you need to communicate with locals.
  • Be prepared for anything and enjoy your adventure!

If you are taking your pet abroad with you this will include a lot more planning and paperwork.

This was researched by checking online and for reference only. If you are taking your leisure vehicle abroad you may need to do some research of your own.
